Founded by producer and musician Paul Murphy, Claremont 56 is one of the most discerning and carefully curated independent record labels of the last two decades. Operating below the radar but with a dedicated fan base that quickly snaps up physical copies of the label’s limited-edition releases, the imprint has been serving up beautiful, picturesque and occasionally dancefloor adjacent music from a small but perfectly formed roster of artists since 2007. Musically, the Claremont 56 sound is atmospheric and mood-enhancing but stylistically hard to pin down – though Murphy cites Jazz Funk, West Coast Rock, downtempo grooves, Balearica, sun-down soundscapes and vintage progressive rock as sonic inspirations.

In his own recording career, Mudd has been one half of Smith & Mudd since 2000, working alongside partner Benjamin James Smith. ‘BISON’, also formed with Benjamin James Smith, includes krautrock legend, Holger Czukay from ‘Can’ and Salvatore Principato from the cult NY 80’s band ‘Liquid Liquid’, Mudd & Pollard, live band ‘Paqua’ with Quinn Lamont Luke from the Phenomenal Handclap Band and Patrick Dawes from Groove Armada, ‘Hillside’ with Patrick and old friend Alex and now on a solo career.

With his new album ‘In The Garden Of Mindfulness’ released in 2024. Mudd has also worked with Jazz drumming legend Chico Hamilton, on the release ‘Kerry’s Caravan’ and Ahmed Fakroun, a pioneer of modern Arabic world music, on ‘Drago’.

Mudd has Dj’ed across the world and tours Japan every year. Mudd has also played at Stockholms award winning club night ‘Slow Blow’, Lux in Portugal, Sarcastic disco & A Club Called Rhonda in LA, PS1 festival at MoMa New York, No Way Back in San Francisco.
