The (oldest) Greek Burgers Society (GBS) is a Papas family initiative that seeks to preserve the tradition and history of fast food eating culture that originated in Greece in the 1970s; provide information and knowledge, thus shaping eating culture in the present, and create a future that humanity will be proud to call upon: “We are what we eat”.
Giorgos Papaeletheriou was one of many Greeks who immigrated to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century.
His given name was eventually shortened to Papageorge aka "Papa", a practice that continues to this day among the Greek immigrants.
Upon his return to Greece, Papa introduced new cultural practices, one of which was his most cherished discovery: "the hamburger."
The ancient Greeks have been making bread and cheese and serving it with roasted meat, vegetables, and olive oil since ever.
These are the fundamental ingredients required to create the ideal food byte, which evolved into the toasted sandwich and, eventually, the burger as we know it today.
As pure food enthusiasts, the modern Greeks enthusiastically embraced the discovery of the burger, realising its deep connection to pharmacology, medicine, and therapeutic philosophy, and its significant role in everyday life and wellbeing.
Since its conception in 1981, Papageorge’s Burger House has focused on the quality of the food ingredients, the textures and the tastes that make a perfect burger and expanded this extraordinary street food culture across the city and beyond.
Street food has been in the Greeks DNA since the first souvlaki with gyro place to open in Athens from the legend Isaak Meraklidis (pictured below at his Monastiraki "gyro" place), who has, against all odds, opened it right next to the first ever American Market in Athens (a store with second-hand clothes made in the USA) back in the early 50s .
The Greek Burgers Society is an open community for all who want to contribute media archives, personal stories, and any material that could help better document the long history of street food culture in Greece.
